Larnaca residents are in for some disruption next month as the second phase of street and sidewalk renovation projects begins. These works aim to improve accessibility for individuals with disabilities in the city’s commercial center.
This phase will cover parts of Ermou Street (a section of which was completed during the first phase of the project) and Zinonos Kitieos Street, as well as Galilaiou, Nikolaou Rossou, N.D. Dimitriou, Kosma Lysioti, Nikolaou Laniti, Kosti Savva, Demosthenous Mitsi, Evanthias Pieridou, Filiou Zannetou, and Evryviadou streets.
The work involves upgrading and reconstructing existing roads by removing asphalt layers and installing cobblestones, widening sidewalks, removing roadside parking (except for supply vehicles), and upgrading rainwater drainage systems, infrastructure, and utility networks.
Additionally, there will be underground service installations, placement of urban equipment and electronic information points for users, lighting upgrades, road signage, and traffic management reconfigurations.
Further improvements are planned for the existing road network to connect infrastructure projects completed during the 2007-13 and 2014-20 periods. These include the renovation of the three squares (Ermou, Agiou Lazarou, Medieval Castle), the first phase of road and sidewalk renovations for accessibility, the new municipal market, Zouchouri Square, and the Multipurpose Center (formerly the community center).
This project is co-funded by the European THALIA program. Work will begin in September and is expected to be completed by September 2026. “The overall design transforms Larnaca’s urban commercial center from a vehicle-oriented area into one that promotes alternative transportation for pedestrians, cyclists, and individuals with disabilities, making it fully accessible for all.”
The reconstruction and improvement of the roads will allow for both aesthetic and functional upgrades to the area, which is the heart of Larnaca, while also increasing the traffic safety of pedestrians, cyclists, and individuals with mobility issues.
Additionally, the project aims to enhance green spaces and highlight the architectural, urban, historical, social, and environmental value of the city’s commercial center.
“Essentially, these works aim to create conditions for sustainable mobility, enhance green areas, provide decorative shading of the road surface, and highlight the traditional character of the area. At the same time, they will reduce noise pollution and the emission of gas pollutants and dust,” the municipality’s announcement emphasized.
