Starting from 25 February 2026, dual nationals holding both British and Cypriot citizenship must use their UK passport when entering the United Kingdom. This change comes as a result of updated border entry requirements introduced by the UK government and shared by the Cyprus High Commission in London. For official guidance, visit the UK Government dual citizenship page and the Cyprus High Commission website.
Previously, dual British–Cypriot nationals could travel to the UK with either passport. However, under the latest rules, entering the UK with a non-UK passport, even if it is valid, will no longer be accepted. Travellers must present a valid British passport at UK borders or risk being denied entry.
This update relates to the introduction of the UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system, which now affects all non-visa nationals. Cypriot citizens are required to obtain an ETA, whereas British citizens are exempt. The UK government has clarified that to benefit from this exemption, dual nationals must enter using their British citizenship document.
For those who don’t have a UK passport at hand, the UK allows a Certificate of Entitlement as an alternative proof of the right to live and work in the UK. This certificate, attached to a foreign passport, exempts holders from the ETA requirement.
Important details about the certificate include:
While valid, this option can be costly and cumbersome compared to simply maintaining a current UK passport.
The UK’s implementation of the ETA system aims to strengthen border security and simplify entry processes. Since British citizens do not need an ETA, enforcing use of the UK passport by dual nationals ensures alignment with these new systems. Similar practices are followed by other countries requiring their citizens to enter on their national passports.
