Buildings erected after 2012 benefit from the application of strict European seismic standards, known as Eurocodes, which significantly enhance earthquake resilience. Similarly, structures built between 1994 and 2011 fare better compared to those predating 1994, when modern seismic regulations were still being developed.
Unfortunately, many properties across Cyprus — especially those in coastal zones — were constructed before 1994 and do not comply with current safety standards. Factors like corrosion accelerated by salty sea air, weathering, unauthorized modifications, and lack of maintenance threaten the structural integrity of these older buildings.
“The aging of Cyprus’ building stock is one of the nation’s most urgent challenges,” Stylianou stated. ETEK is advocating for the implementation of a coherent national policy mandating regular building inspections and maintenance to mitigate risks.
Priority should be given to public buildings, hospitals, schools, and multi-residential complexes, where occupant safety is paramount. ETEK has submitted multiple proposals to government bodies, alongside organizing expert seminars and publishing guidelines on maintaining structural safety.
While no building can guarantee complete immunity from earthquake damage, adherence to strict engineering standards significantly reduces the chances of collapse and fatal injuries. Early identification of structural faults through thorough inspections, followed by prompt repair works, remains the most effective defense strategy.
