Cyprus Lawyer Faces Serious Charges Over €185,000 Estate Fund Misappropriation
A 47-year-old Cypriot lawyer has recently been referred to the Limassol Criminal Court to face a total of 14 charges relating to alleged theft and money laundering involving €185,000 from an estate she was appointed to co-administer. The case, which stems from events earlier this year, highlights complexities around estate management and the legal responsibilities tied to it.
The Legal Proceedings So Far
Following directions from the Legal Service, the case was sent directly for trial on 29 September. The accused appeared before the District Court and remains out on restrictive bail conditions, including a substantial €100,000 financial guarantee. The charges include theft by an agent and money laundering, with hearings now scheduled to proceed at the Limassol Criminal Court in November.
Background and Allegations
These allegations originate from a police complaint filed concerning the administration of an estate belonging to a deceased Russian national. Around mid-2023, the lawyer was appointed by the Limassol District Court as a co-administrator, representing the interests of the estate’s heirs.
The contested funds, held in a bank account for the heirs, were reportedly transferred online in multiple transactions totalling €185,000 to a corporate account controlled by the lawyer’s firm. The complaint alleges these transfers were unauthorized, which forms the crux of the charges.
Context and Previous Cases
It’s important to note that the charges remain allegations until proven in court, where the evidence will be fully examined. Notably, this isn’t the lawyer’s first brush with the law over similar accusations. She previously faced criminal charges related to similar matters but avoided trial by reimbursing the complainants in full.
However, the new case involves a distinct set of transactions and will be dealt with separately. The next major step is the scheduled hearing this November.
